Vision:
ACT’s vision is a day when every dog and cat in our community is valued, safe and treated with respect and kindness.
Mission:
The mission of ACT is to end the killing of dogs and cats as the county’s primary means to solve the over abundance of unwanted dogs and cats. To reach this mis-sion, we offer non-lethal options at affordable prices. Low cost, high quality ser-vices include a full array of medical services such as spay and neuter, medical check ups, vaccinations, dentals, pet medicines, sickness treatments and a variety of complex surgeries. Our belief is that if people are given affordable and accessi-ble options, they will do the right thing for their four legged family members. Our knowledge is that there are, right now, too many animals losing their lives for no other reason than economics and lack of knowledge of the options.
In 2011, there were over 13,755 cats & dogs deliberately destroyed in
Hillsborough County. Approximately 90% were healthy when they died.
That’s the size of a small town.
That’s over 1,100 in one month.
Almost 300 in a single week.
50 a day, if you take Sunday off.
5 an hour, if you work a 10 hour day.
One every 30 minutes.
Everyday in Hillsborough County — our own hometown — our own backyard,
4 lives are taken in about the amount of time we take to watch a movie.
That’s just not okay, is it?
What It Takes To End The Killing:
Basically, it takes a community of people who just won’t accept killing as an option. The understanding that dead is dead and that killing is not okay. The humility and determination to follow the lead of other communities that have solved the crisis. These communities have several things in common, but it always starts with the idea that killing is just not okay.
The quickest way to start the process is to spay and neuter before the unwanted litters are produced. Feral cats need to be humanely addressed. We need innova-tive adoption programs; we need good public relations and we need community awareness. We need important people in important positions that share the convic-tion that the lives of our animals are as important as the lives of our people. We need compassion combined with one voice. The time is now. If not now, then when? If not us, then who?
