Why Walk?
Quite simply, because it saves lives.
In 2007, more than 26,000 companion animals were destroyed by Hillsborough County. In Pinellas during the same period, almost 15,000 animals met the same cruel fate.
That’s over 40,000 animals in one year.
One proven way to reduce those horrific numbers is to keep them from going in the front door to begin with. To provide low-cost spay and neuter services to people who can’t otherwise afford to have their pets sterilized.
Preventing animals from breeding means you don’t have to kill their offspring.
San Francisco has done it. So has New Hampshire. In fact, in every community where high volume, low-cost spay/neuter has been initiated and sustained, euthanasia has dropped significantly.
ACT is doing just that in the Tampa Bay area. In its first two years of operation, ACT’s clinic on Lemon Street has sterilized over 10,000 pets. Its goal this year is 10,000 more. Since so many people can’t afford even ACT’s low fees, many of the operations are subsidized. So more generous sponsors are needed.
Stride For Strays, ACT’s major fundraiser, made about $40,000 in 2007 and the majority of it was from your team efforts and your support.
Our goal in 2008 is $60,000.
